Liz Truss becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Tuesday, Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Truss became the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, succeeding Boris Johnson. On Monday, the Conservative Party elected her as its new leader.

Truss met with Queen Elizabeth II Tuesday at Balmoral Castle, the Queen’s summer residence in Scotland, where she proposed forming a new government and the Queen accepted. Prior to this, Johnson also met with the Queen and tendered his official resignation.

Truss, who was Foreign Secretary until today, defeated former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak yesterday in a vote among party members by a margin of 81,326 to 60,399 and became the leader of the party. Johnson’s successor had been in question since he announced his resignation in July amid pressure from high-profile scandals.

The United Kingdom is facing surging food and energy costs contributing to an inflation rate forecast to hit 13% in October, the highest in 42 years. Besides the economy, the war in Ukraine and tensions with the European Union are seen as challenges for Truss when she takes office, according to Reuters and Associated Press.

After the party vote, Truss said, “I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills, but also dealing with the long term issues we have on energy supply.” In further comments, she also told the party: “I know that our beliefs resonate with the British people: Our beliefs in freedom, in the ability to control your own life, in low taxes, in personal responsibility. I know that’s why people voted for us in such numbers in 2019 and as your party leader I intend to deliver what we promised those voters right across our great country.”

In a brief message on Twitter, Sunak wrote: “It’s right we now unite behind the new PM, Liz Truss, as she steers the country through difficult times.”

Johnson also expressed support for Truss on Twitter, writing: “I know she has the right plan to tackle the cost of living crisis, unite our party and continue the great work of uniting and levelling up our country. Now is the time for all Conservatives to get behind her 100 percent.”

The opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer was critical of Truss’ proposed tax cuts and reductions in levies. “We’ve heard far more from the latest prime minister about cuts to corporation taxes over the summer, than we have about the cost-of-living crisis,” she said.

Greek police arrest more than 60 people for gold smuggling

Saturday, December 1, 2018

On Wednesday, Greek police announced they arrested 63 people for gold smuggling. According to a report from Associated Press (AP), police seized cash, gold bars, and other items, totaling about two million euros (roughly 2.3 million US dollars).

Police said on Friday the police operation, started on Tuesday, involved 50 homes and 30 stores. Police accused the suspects of buying stolen gold from foreigners who allegedly robbed homes.

Police said the scheme had involved at least two collaborating criminal networks over two years or longer. The suspects had allegedly been melting the gold items and exporting the gold to Turkey using tour buses to avoid taxes, and to Germany. The gold was allegedly smuggled through a number of pawn shops, according to AP.

Press reported pawn shops have multiplied in Greece in the financial crisis ongoing there since 2010, which reportedly has caused people to buy an increased amount of gold and silver to store their assets.

The warrant said property to be seized at the bank’s San Francisco headquarters was related to the unauthorized creation of accounts by Wells Fargo employees including the names of individuals for the accounts; account information and fees; the names of employees and their managers who created accounts without the consent of the Wells Fargo customers in question; and all communications including emails referencing the unauthorised accounts.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris’s criminal probe is part of an increasing list of officials nationwide questioning the business practices of Wells Fargo such as California State Treasurer John Chiang who announced a one-year suspension of State investment with the bank on September 28; Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs followed suit with a year-long ban on October 3; and Democratic United States Senators Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who wrote to the U.S. Security Exchanges Commission (SEC) suggesting investigation on September 29.

How To Find Low Cost Home, Auto, And Other Insurance Coverage In Quebec And Montreal

By Adriana J Noton

When one is looking to find car or home insurance in Canada, one has a great many options to choose from. So, whether one lives in Quebec or Montreal, often good deals can be found. This is especially true for homeowners and drivers who have no marks against a license or recent property claims. Whereas, depending on circumstances, both premiums can be much higher if one does have any such record in relation to driving or home ownership.

In addition, when it comes to both Quebec and Montreal, there are a number of insurance providers which can assist one with a variety of products and services. As such, one may want to locate the nearest local agent, as often such agents can be quite helpful on an ongoing basis. So, whether one is looking for insurance for the home, an automobile or other needs, the first place to look may be online.

For, there are a great many agencies which now host websites, some including premium calculators which help one figure estimates on such payments. One can then find the agent closest to the area in which one lives to discover more information about the availability and cost of such coverage. As such, while there may be different agents, there also may be some agencies which offer lower premiums than others. So, in order to get the best premiums on such insurance, one may want review a variety of local agency websites to determine which one might work best for current insurance needs.

As such, doing an online search can allow one the ability to discuss such insurance with as many agents as possible until one feels comfortable with the agency, agent and premiums such companies offer. Of course, such changes in premiums may be based on a variety of circumstance. Such as how old a driver may be when it comes to auto insurance, the value of a home and contents and whether or not one carries any other insurance with the company such as life or health.

In addition, many agencies in Canada offer online quotes based on zip code alone, so if one is interested in finding out what such insurance may cost, one can simply find a local agent who offers such services online. As often all one needs to do to determine the cost of such premiums is to enter a zip code into an online form and press a Submit key. Still, one may want discuss such coverage with an agent for there may or may not be special conditions or items specific to one area in which certain coverage is not possible.

However, if one knows the exact make and model of a vehicle, the license numbers and ages of all drivers then most often one can get a quote that is close to accurate for such a premium. Whereas, when it comes to insurance for the home, one often needs to know the square footage and value of contents of the structure as well as contents in order to apply for such a policy. As such, estimates related to coverage for the home can often vary a great deal more than automobile estimates.

In addition, if one installs bolt locks, fire alarms, security doors, smoke detectors or other theft deterrents, one can often get a discount based on the increased safety of the home. Although, depending on the credit rating of an individual, one may be required to pay such premiums on an annual or semi-annual basis. However, those with good credit ratings can often pay for such coverage monthly. As for automobile rates, while many agencies offer incentives for good drivers, it is often the age of the driver and previous driving history which such rates are based on when applying for such coverage.

To this end, whether one is purchasing auto or home insurance in Montreal or Quebec, often one can find a good deal on both. In order to do so, one simply needs to type Montreal or Quebec insurance into any search engine and read through the display results to find a local agent. Of course, while some insurance quotes can be obtained through a variety of agency online forms, one may want to calculate estimated premiums on the chosen agency website before visiting with an agent.

Its payload, the MTSAT-2 satellite designed to control air traffic and track weather patterns, has successfully separated from the rocket. It is due to be inserted into a geostationary orbit on the 21st of February.

The satellite is owned by the Civil Aviation Bureau and the Japan Meteorological Agency, part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

“A commonsense proposal”: Wikinews interviews Michelle Tilley, Campaign Director for Yes on 820

Marijuana plants. Image: Jennifer Martin.

Wednesday, February 1, 2023

On March 7, voters in the US state of Oklahoma will decide on State Question 820, the Marijuana Legalization Initiative.

If the initiative passes, adults 21 and older could own up to an ounce (28.35 grams) of recreational marijuana and cultivate “not more than six (6) mature marijuana plants and six (6) seedlings” in their homes, and some convictions for marijuana possession could be expunged.

The state’s profits earned by taxing marijuana transactions would fund the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority, while the rest would be split between: the state’s fund pool (30%), programs in public schools to improve student success, extracurricular activities, and decrease drug abuse (30%), governmental and nonprofit programs to counter drug abuse (20%), courts (10%), and the local government where the transaction occurred (10%).

Wikinews emailed interview questions to the Yes campaign on January 6; Michelle Tilley, their Campaign Director, responded on January 11. The following is the interview with Tilley.
