Restaurant Menu Covers: Disposable, Wipe Able Or Washable

One of the core purposes of restaurant menu covers is to keep the pages of menus clean. But how do you keep the covers themselves clean? The answer depends on the type of cover that you get. Some people opt to get disposable covers that they can throw away when they start to get dirty. Others choose to get wipe-able covers, one of the most popular choices among restaurant owners. Still others select to get truly washable menu covers, which also have their own pros and cons. Which type is the right type for your restaurant?Disposable restaurant menu covers are obviously very convenient. The cover itself keeps the menu clean. When the cover itself gets grimy and gross it can simply be removed and thrown away. A new menu cover can quickly replace it. However, like many disposable items, it has drawbacks that deter some people from selecting this option for their restaurants. The main problem is, of course, that the disposable cover is a throw away item that is not very earth-friendly. Restaurants that are green in other ways cant feel right about having a throwaway menu cover. Additionally, the cost of disposable menu covers is low but it can add up quickly if your restaurant requires frequent replacement. A ribs restaurant, for example, would probably have to replace these covers after nearly every customer.Because of the drawbacks of the disposable cover, a large percentage of restaurants instead opt to use wipe-able restaurant menu covers. As their name suggests, these are covers that can be quickly wiped down to clean them off. Restaurants that have multi-page menus can order multi-page wipe-able covers. Theyre easy to use since typically the menu pages simply slip inside of these covers. They are relatively affordable. Plus they are greener than disposable menus.Restaurants that truly care about being green will often forego wipe-able menu covers and choose washable covers instead. These are the most eco-friendly option because they can be removed from the menu and washed for re-use. They are often made of fabric and therefore are designed to last a very long time. This is also a greener option than the plastic that is the common material used to make wipe-able and even disposable menu covers. Another great reason to choose washable covers is that they are fancy. They add a really nice touch to a menu at an upscale restaurant. Of course, these wouldnt be good for a ribs restaurant; you want to use this option in restaurants where the menus arent likely to get too grubby. Nevertheless, its nice that they can be removed, washed and replaced as needed. What an elegant choice. So what is the right solution for your restaurant? It depends a little bit on the money that you are willing to spend. However, the question is whether you want to spend less now (buying disposable restaurant menu covers) or less over the long run (which may mean buying either wipe-able or washable covers). What will influence your decision more than the money is probably how green you want to be. This is an increasingly important issue not only for business owners but also for their customers. As more and more customers demand to work with green businesses, more and more restaurants will switch from disposable covers to greener options. Finally, the type of restaurant you have and the type of food you serve will also factor in to what type of cover is right for your restaurant.

Illinois high schools now required to buy insurance for athletes

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

This past Sunday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a bill known as “Rocky’s Law” that requires Illinois high schools, through the local school district, to buy catastrophic injury insurance up to US$3 million or medical costs for up to five years, whichever one comes first, that covers student athletes. The insurance must cover student athletes while they are competing.

The legislation was named after Rasul “Rocky” Clark. In 2000, the Eisenhower High School football player became paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a tackle during a game. His school based health insurance covered the costs of his medical treatment. A legislator sponsoring the bill noted that the need for this type of insurance is rare. Clark’s mother attended the legislation signing. Her son died last year.

Before parents can claim money from school insurance, they first must pay out US$50,000. Schools have until January 1, 2014 to comply with the law. Schools cannot charge students more than US$5 to defray the cost of insurance. If a school district already requires student to be covered through private health insurance, they are exempted from this law.

Home Improvement With Benches And Awnings

Submitted by: Jim Ames

If you’re a home owner concerned about increasing the value of your home and property, don’t neglect the exterior, particularly if you have a yard or garden. With a small amount of work and a bit of an eye for landscaping, you can use these two elements to make your garden or back yard a votive island of calm around your home.

First, look for sight lines. You don’t want your awning to block any of the views from the house; take the time to use a bit of trigonometry to place your awning first. Remember that something that’s twice as far away will look half as tall (that trigonometry that we mentioned earlier); moving the awning farther away from the house will keep it from obscuring a view downrange.

Second, think about what it’ll be used for. If it’s meant to be a sunshade, or otherwise be simply decorative, it doesn’t need to be watertight. On the other hand, if items for the yard or decorative items are going to be stored under it, it needs to be able to keep the rain off as well as the sun.

Awnings should be chosen for color coordination with your yard they’re going to be a place to sit comfortably in the summer with the sun kept off you. Benches and awnings are natural complements, and less of a financial hazard than the dreaded gazebo, which requires more extensive construction and drainage work.

When looking for benches, again, focus on the kind of style you want to do. Decorative stone benches can lend a refined, aristocratic air to the lawn; many are also topiary benches with built in flower beds. For those on a more frugal budget, benches in the Windham and Rock Reading styles are wood and ironwork, and can be had inexpensively, since they arrive pre-assembled, and are meant to be installed by the owner.

If you choose to go with a wooden bench, be sure to treat it with a weatherproofing compound to keep the wood from absorbing water, losing its natural oils and cracking and fading. Much the same way you’d work to maintain an external deck, you’ll want to take the same precautions with any wooden furniture. Fortunately, most wooden benches use stainless steel for their “ironwork” so they won’t rust out from underneath you without a lot of time and work.

Decide if you want your bench to be anchored to the ground, which will require placing a small concrete slab and anchor bolts, or if you want it to be mobile, or movable later. And, like the discussion on sight lines, focus on what you want to see from the bench when you place it.

These tips can help you improve the value of your home considerably, and make your yard a pleasanter place to visit!

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Athletes prepare for 2012 Summer Paralympics at the Paralympic Fitness Centre

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Microsoft to licence Windows source code

Thursday, January 26, 2006

In a move aimed to prevent fines stemming from its antitrust lawsuit filed by the European Commission (EC), Microsoft announced that it will be releasing portions of the source code to its Windows operating system.

The EC ruled in March 2004 that Microsoft had abused its position in the low-end server and media player market, and required that Microsoft “disclose complete and accurate interface documentation which would allow non-Microsoft work group servers to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers”. Microsoft reacted by making available 12,000 pages of technical documentation and up to 500 hours of technical support, but the EC came to the conclusion that it was not enough.

Announcing that “we are putting our most valuable intellectual property on the table so we can put technical compliance issues to rest”, Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith asserted that Microsoft would be superseding the EC’s requirements as a sign of good faith. “While we are confident that we are presently in full compliance with the Decision, we wish to dispel any notion that Microsoft’s technical documents are insufficient”, said Smith.

The EC responded in a memo that it will study Microsoft’s reply to the Statement of Objections once it receives the full details. However, EC Competition Commissioner spokesman Jonathan Todd commented that “it would be premature to conclude access to the source code would resolve the problem of the lack of compliance with our decision.”

A similar offer was made by Microsoft in August 2002 during its antitrust lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice and several states’ Attorneys General. The resulting “Microsoft Communications Protocols Program” had suffered continuous criticism regarding excessive cost, paperwork, and non-disclosure agreements. It is unclear at this time if Microsoft’s planned “Work Group Server Protocol Program” will suffer from the same issues if accepted by the EC.

Microsoft is expected to return to the EC courts in April.

Dangers Of Hazing

Dangers of Hazing

by

Joseph Devine

For many college Greek organizations, athletic teams, and select clubs, hazing has become an integral part of the recruiting process. Because many past members feel it is a form of initiation, the tradition has continued for hundreds of years and continues to thrive on high-school and college campuses throughout the nation. Hazing can consistent of many different activities including athletic competitions, eating contests, or dressing in funny or unattractive clothing. However, one form of hazing that is exceedingly dangerous and alarmingly prevalent is the practice of binge drinking.

Binge drinking occurs when a person consumes a large amount of alcohol in a small amount of time for the sole purpose of becoming intoxicated. There are several ways to do this beyond simply drinking glass after glass. Some organizations employ the use of beer bongs, keg stands, drinking games or shot blocks to encourage members to binge drink. Though this may seem like a great way to have fun with friends and get to know members of a group of which you would like to join, binge drinking can lead to serious, even fatal consequences and is more high-risk than any other drinking behaviors. The Centers for Disease Control reports that of all the alcohol consumed in the United States, 75% is in the form of binge drinking. Relating to driving and DUI/DWIs, binge drinkers are 14 times more likely to report alcohol-impaired driving than those who do not binge drink. Binge drinking can lead to the following consequences: Alcohol Poisoning Injuries, such as falling, burning, drowning, getting in a car accident, firearm injuries, sexual assault or domestic violence Acquisition of a sexually transmitted infection (or, STI) Unintended pregnancy Higher risk for liver disease (or, cirrhosis) Higher risk for neurological damage Choking from vomit Alcohol-related death Becoming a part of an organization is not worth putting your health or personal safety at risk. Hazing is illegal on most college campuses and law enforcement has become more vigilant than ever in punishing these offending organizations. Because the statistics are so much higher for alcohol-related accidents for binge drinkers, participants should realize the serious consequences of their decisions before getting behind the wheel of a car. However, mistakes can still happen and the law may be able to protect you from having your license suspended, incurring heavy fines, or jail time for a DUI/DWI charge. If you or someone you love was a victim of hazing and was subsequently charged with a DUI or DWI, visit the web site of experienced Rhode Island DUI lawyer James Powderly to learn how you can fight your charge.

Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.

Brazilian environmentalists tell residents to urinate in shower to save water

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Environmentalists in Brazil are urging the country’s residents to urinate in the shower while washing themselves, to help conserve water and save the rainforest. Television ads being aired in the country claim that by doing so, the nation could save over 1,000 gallons of water per household each year.

SOS Mata Atlantica ran the ad campaign in an attempt to use comedy to get people to reduce the amount of water they use. “[The ad is] a way to be playful about a serious subject,” said Adriana Kfouri, a spokesperson for Atlantica.

The animated ad narrated by children shows people, including a trapeze artist, an alien and dancers, all taking a shower while at the same time, urinating in it. The ending of the ad then states, “Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!”

Ken Livingstone, former mayor of London, England, proposed a similar campaign in 2006. He said urine should be classified as a “green waste” and that “there is no earthly reason that you need to flush the loo if you have merely urinated. That’s a huge saving of water.”
