IndyMac Bank placed into conservatorship by US Government

Saturday, July 12, 2008

In what regulators have described as the second-largest bank failure in the history of the United States, IndyMac Bank has been closed by the Office of Thrift Supervision and placed under the conservatorship of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) due to plummeting shares and the start of a run on the bank. This is the fifth FDIC-insured failure of the year.

The FDIC has said that it will transfer all insured deposits and substantial assets, to the new IndyMac Federal Bank which, as the name implies, is controlled by an agency of the federal government. The aim is for the transfer to be completed by Monday.

In a press release, the FDIC attempted to reassure customers by saying that, “insured depositors and borrowers will automatically become customers of IndyMac Federal, FSB and will continue to have uninterrupted customer service and access to their funds by ATM, debit cards and writing checks in the same manner as before.” As an FDIC-insured bank, all FDIC accounts are guaranteed up to US$100,000. The FDIC has also placed a special advance, guaranteeing any funds over $100,000 for 50 cents to the dollar.

This move by the FDIC is expected to cost the organization at least four billion USD per year.

In the days leading up to the conservatorship, market analysts have predicted the failure of IndyMac due to the fact that it was shedding jobs and closing many of its branch offices.

Eight Rules To Designing An Eclectic Look}

Submitted by: Janet Voth

Would you like to break out of your design box and try something new? Maybe its time to experiment with an eclectic look. Here are some tips to pull off an eclectic style that works.

Why it works: When it’s done great, eclectic decorating shows your confidence in your own style yet still adheres to the fundamentals of great interior design. You don’t have to choose between profiles or periods; there’s room for a range of all your favorites. Plus, isn’t it fun to feel like you’re getting away with something different?

First lets take a look at what eclectic is not. Its not a random gathering of furniture, art, and design elements with no rhyme or reason. It is a fun, imaginative grouping of unrelated style furnishings that are pulled together by scale, colour, and/or theme.

If you are tired of boring dcor that looks the same, then an eclectic style may be just the thing to showcase your unique expression and personality in your home.

Here are some decorating rules to help you create an eclectic look:

PLAY – Give yourself permission to go outside of your comfort zone and see what works. Sometimes trial and error leads to brilliant discoveries.

HARMONY – Find a common element that you can carry throughout the room. Whether its a texture, colour, or scale you can create harmony by finding something in common to display in various pieces. Sometimes choosing the right pillows or decorative cushions can be just what you need to make uncommon items feel related. Together art and accessories can be used to help unify the space.

COLOUR – Let your imagination soar as you expand your palette. Everything does not have to be in a one or two colour scheme. An inspiration piece can serve as a guide to couple vivid colours together for an exciting visual display.

FOCAL POINT Pull your design together by having a focal point such as a piece of artwork or a major furniture piece that draws your eye to it when you enter the room. For example a vignette of vases at varying sizes, heights and colours can add a striking focus point to a room.

BE A MIXOLOGIST Dare to match stripes and floral, place soft fuzzy pillows next to a rough bristly lamp shade, try luxurious silks next to worn leather. Let fabric, texture, and patterns be notes in the visual symphony you are creating.

THEME Furniture can be pulled from various styles as you tell a visual story with a theme. Find an emotional feeling you want to evoke. Use the elements of the room to make a big statement that paint a picture.

RULE OF THREE In design its smart to limit the amount of varying elements to 3. Use no more than three unique colors, textures, styles.

PERSONALITY Make the room be a direct expression of something authentic for you. Be creative and add a personal touches that make the room unique inspired design to suits you to a t.

Good luck to you as you explore your daring side and create a beautiful interior that expresses your creative flair.

Four arrested in three Naperville, Illinois prostitution stings

Monday, March 15, 2010

An undercover investigation by Naperville, Illinois law enforcement has led to the arrest last Thursday of four people allegedly involved in prostitution. The stings came after police received tips that people were using websites like Craigslist and Backpage.com to sell sexual performances in Naperville hotels.

Patricia H. Scoleri of Naperville was arrested after an unidentified neighbor observed consistently suspicious activity at Scoleri’s home. Traffic was unusually heavy and consisted mostly of luxury cars in an otherwise quiet, middle-class neighborhood. Also, the visitors were mainly middle-aged men, and an odd string of lavender-colored lights were hung on the front window.

Police say Scoleri worked alone. She was arrested at 2 p.m. local time (2000 UTC) and is charged with violation of anti-prostitution laws, anti-cannabis laws, and the Massage Licensing Act. She apparently has four children, but the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has neither contacted her nor received a police report on her.

The second sting occurred at 5:30 p.m the same day (2330 UTC) and resulted in the arrest of Chicago resident Tonya M. Adams. She is charged with prostitution and driving without a license. Another sting about an hour later resulted in the arrests of Jessica M. Walley, a Skokie resident, and Mark A. Williams, a self-admitted Schaumburg gang member. “Walley was charged with prostitution and unlawful possession of cannabis. Williams was charged with pimping, obstructing a peace officer, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance,” reports WBBM News Radio 780.

All four suspects are free, having paid the required ten percent of their $1,000 bail. They may face additional charges related to crack cocaine discovered during the police investigation. Arraignment is scheduled for next month at the DuPage County Circuit Courthouse in Wheaton.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Astronomers witness supernova

Thursday, August 31, 2006

Scientists using NASA‘s Swift Satellite and other telescopes have observed a supernova in near real time occurring in the constellation of Aries. The explosion is said to be the most powerful explosion known to scientists, which consists of a gamma-ray burst or an x-ray blast. Scientists say that bursts signal the beginning of a star’s death.

Swift first detected the explosion on February 18 (it was given a designation GRB 060218), which allowed telescopes and satellites to watch the event as it happened. The blast lasted for more than 2,000 seconds (33 minutes).

“This is totally new and unexpected. This is the type of unscripted event in our nearby universe that we hoped Swift could catch,” said Neil Gehrels, Swift principal investigator at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“Those observations capture the time when the star collapsed, ejected its outer envelope and most of its mass and left a compact remnant behind. And we think that compact remnant is a neutron star,” said an author writing for journal Nature, where the report will be published on Thursday.

Scientists are also planning on using the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory in an attempt to get more images of the event.

The star is at least 440 million light years from Earth. The group of scientists was led by Sergio Campana of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics and Alicia Soderberg, a graduate student at Caltech in Pasadena, California.

Swift was launched in November of 2004.

Where Is Andes?

Most of Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, and parts of Argentina, Bolivia and Venezuela, are in the Andes. The Andes are the second-highest range of mountains in the world. Only the Himalayas in Asia are higher. North America has a peak. Mount McKinley in Alaska, that is 20,300 feet high, but there are seventeen peaks in the Andes that are higher than that. The highest of them, Aconcagua, is about 23,000 feet high. (See the article on ACONCAGUA. ) The highest lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, is in the Peruvian Andes. The Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro and his men reached the Andes more than four hundred years ago. They found beautiful Indian cities but they destroyed most of them. Most of the people who live in the Andes today are a mixture of Indian and Spanish. They are farmers, miners, and herders of sheep and other animals. Most of them are very poor. Their farms are high in the mountains. You would find it difficult to breathe, so high in the Andes, because the higher you go the thinner the air becomes, but the natives are used to it. Their lungs will hold much more air than ours will. The Andes run through tropical country, but for the most part the climate in the mountains is cool or cold. The high peaks are always covered with snow. It is very difficult to cross the Andes from east to west. Only two rail-road lines cross the Andes, and parts of these lines run through long tunnels. Most of the people who cross the Andes must travel along narrow, winding footpaths. The travellers use narrow footbridges to cross deep ravines. Some of the bridges are nothing but saving spans of rope. The people either carry loads on their back or use pack animals. The Indians use the llama as a beast of burden. The llama is a member of the camel family. The mule also has become an important beast of burden in the Andes. The Andes vary in width from forty miles to more than four hundred miles. They rise almost straight up, in many places, from the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The eastern slopes of the Andes are not as steep as the western. Because the eastern slopes catch more rain, many great South American rivers, including the Amazon, begin there. There are still active volcanoes in the Andes. The best known is Cotopaxi which is more than nineteen thousand feet high. The Andes Mountains are rich in metals. There are great silver mines in Peru and Bolivia. Much copper and mercury is found in the mountains. Bolivia has some of the largest tin mines in the world. There are also gold mines in the Andes. There are many wonderful things to see in the Andes Mountains. First, there are the high, snow-covered peaks. Then there are lovely lakes and waterfalls. Some of the cities high in the Andes are among the most beautiful in the world. Some ancient Indian buildings still stand, and the ruins of others are very interesting. More than a thousand years ago, long before the white man came, the Indians living in the Andes had built great temples, aqueducts to carry water, paved roads, and other things.

4-year-old boy killed by dog in Liverpool, England

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

A four-year-old boy has been killed by a dog in the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. The child has been identified as John Paul Massey. The animal belonged to his uncle. The boy’s 63-year-old grandmother Helen Foulkes tried to protect the boy but ended up getting bitten by the dog in the process. She had to receive hospital treatment for the injury.

The dog itself was shot dead in the front garden of the house where the attack had taken place. The police had said that they did not take further action after receiving a report about dog breeding earlier this year.

Chief Superintendent Steve Ashley from the police force said about the incident: “In February this year a housing officer rang Merseyside Police to say they had received complaints of dog breeding at the address. At that time the police said it wasn’t a police matter and no action was taken by Merseyside Police.

That is contrary to our policies and an investigation is now launched into exactly what happened in February.”

Melbourne Victory clinch A-League premiership

Sunday, December 17, 2006

Melbourne Victory has won the 2006-07 A-League football (soccer) premiership after defeating New Zealand Knights 4-0 at Olympic Park, Melbourne.

The win takes Melbourne to 41 points, 13 ahead of Sydney FC in second place, with only four games remaining in the regular season. This makes it mathematically impossible for the Victory to be caught.

The regular season consists of 21 home-and-away rounds, with each team playing each other team three times. Each match sees the winning team awarded three competition points, or in the case of a draw, the teams receive one point each. The club at the top of the ladder – with the most points – is crowned A-League premiers, whilst the winner of the Grand Final is crownded champions.

Melbourne Victory have also led the competition in crowd numbers during the 2006-07 season, with an average attendance of 26,512 at the end of Round 17 – 10,698 more than the next-highest, Queensland Roar. The Victory’s attendance of 50,333 at Telstra Dome when they played Sydney FC on December 10, 2006 set a new national record for a domestic football (soccer) match in Australia.

Victory’s premiership also gives them a spot in the AFC Champions League, the premier club tournament for Asian Football Confederation countries. Football Federation Australia become a member of the AFC in January 2006, after moving from the Oceania Football Confederation on January 1, 2006.

Melbourne have been the runaway leaders of the 2006-07 competition, a huge improvement on the seventh-placed finish that they achieved during the 2005-06 season. Their striking combination of Danny Allsopp, “Socceroo” Archive Thompson and Brazilian Fred has yielded more goals than any other this campaign.

Japanese University Students Experienced Employment Ice Age

By Christina Xia

Japanese university students are experiencing employment “ice age.” Inaugural graduates next spring, default rate was 57.6%, the lowest since 1996 the statistics.

For the convenience of graduate employment, as well as to facilitate the selection of talents, Japan, held every year in various seminars around the country, students and employers to meet directly with each other have a good impression, the test can be signed by the recruitment office enterprise contract, and this is the so-called The “default.” Got the “default” students even if the work were available, did not get the “default” students will be like a cat on hot bricks, non-stop to participate in various seminars.

17 shows held in Tokyo port 400 students have participated into two more than last year, and to participate in the enterprise that will have less three. No long-term outcome to attend the inauguration activities, some students nervous breakdown and had to receive treatment for clinical psychologists.

National University students are also struggling. Hitotsubashi University, famous universities in Japan, 2010, 700 students graduated in spring, there are 100 without a job, select repeat or graduate school. According to the ministry concerned, this year’s 568,000 college students graduating in the spring, there are more than 80,000 jobs and choose not repeat, is expected to graduate next spring, could not find work due to selection will be more repetition.

What is the crux of Graduates in the Job? Is from the students themselves in terms of quality issues.

First of all, Japanese universities since 2006 into the “all Time”, as long as the pay, for each high school can be more than the University entrance examination is no longer a “single-log bridge”, university students early is not “elite” of the. In the candidates, many of the people is difficult to achieve the requirements of the employer. And the economic downturn, many units are in reducing costs, the use of new more circumspect, to take “strict selection of doctrine”, there is no qualified student would prefer to reduce the employer plan or simply do not move, it is said 70% of such enterprises. When the candidates defeated many college students, most of them feel that their level is not enough.

Secondly, the Japanese “industrial vacuum” of increasingly serious impact of student employment. Appreciation of the yen, weak domestic market, in order to avoid losses caused by yen appreciation and expansion of overseas markets, many companies moved their factories overseas. Recently, in addition to large multinational companies, the service also has a major push into international trends. In order to maintain the business overseas, many companies are hiring local staff, such as Panasonic and other large enterprises in a substantial increase in hiring staff from overseas, and that other Asian countries and regions, excellent students, studious, high quality than the Japanese students.

Another point is that Japanese university students “underachievement.” Deterioration of the economy, many small and medium enterprises precarious, college students are longing for a well-known large enterprises. Many students do not want to engage in dirty, tired, dangerous work, to solve the shortage problem of SMEs in Japan have trainees from abroad.

Japanese government to ensure students a series of measures of employment. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has repeatedly stressed that the first priority is employment, second job, third, or employment. August set up a “new graduates hired credentialed team.” September 22 to invite the Japanese Ministry of Science, Japan Federation of Economic Organizations, the National Association of Universities and other meetings, proposed to strengthen the university career office advisory body. Health Ministry also made by advisory bodies H ELLO W ORK consultation to increase employment and other programs. But in the end, the Japanese students is difficult mainly due to the inauguration or economic downturn. Experts estimate that Japan’s economy is likely to fall into the fourth quarter of negative growth, Naoto Kan regime seems to do nothing out of the economic difficulties currently understood that the employment situation of Japanese university students will face more severe situation.
