Czech pub food eating experiment resulted in lost weight, lower cholesterol

Friday, March 10, 2006

On February 8, the same day Super Size Me opened in Prague, a Czech film company’s volunteer known as Karel Gustav Bozan began a 1 month diet of Czech pub food and beer in a Czech version called “Super Spek Me”; which translates loosely as “Super Flab Me”.

Zuzana Pudilova of Aerofilms described the volunteer at that time: “He is a well-built man between 45 and 50. He is almost 2 metres tall, he is not exactly thin but until now he has had quite a healthy lifestyle.”

Karel ate typical Czech pub food for an entire month with three rules: no vegetables or fresh fruit (unless they came with a meal) no exercise, and lots of beer.

Karel’s menu consisted entirely of typical Czech dishes. Obesity therapist, Iva Malkova, had warned at the beginning of the project: “People in the Czech Republic eat much more fat, especially animal fat than is recommended.” Pub meals in the Czech Republic often consist of such fatty items as goose with dumplings or sausages.

Yesterday the results were announced; Karel lost six kilos, his cholesterol went down and so did his liver enzymes, triglyceride and uric acid levels. His blood pressure did not change. At his interview with Radio Prague he said: “I feel good, great! The food was varied and there were even enough greens in the garnish. As for beer, I tried to alternate brands but I always settled it with Pilsner. I liked the experiment, it was all paid for by the distributor, Aerofilms. I would do it again, maybe they will propose it to me!”

Zuzana Pudilova of Aerofilms said: “The result of the experiment is surprising – both for us and the experts who monitored it. The medical report says our volunteer has lost weight and his blood sugar has dropped. So we have come to the conclusion that fatty Czech pub grub is not all that bad for you – which I guess wasn’t meant to be the result of the experiment at all.”

Do You Know I Turned My Useless Backyard Into My Dream Riding Arena?}

Submitted by: Andreas Paul

Horse riding is my passion since my childhood and as you all know that it flows in the veins of the country as well. It is known as the second largest spectator sport in Great Britain. Its probably one of the oldest too. I live in my farmhouse and it had a poor looking barn with and uneven terrain where I used tried ride halfheartedly. You know passion has no limits, so a secret plan was echoing in my mind and I was quietly saving for it. I was thinking about horse arena construction through trained hands. A friend of mine told me about some good professionals how could turn my haphazard ground into some serious rehearsal theater. After dreaming and awaiting a lot, finally that day came when my meeting was arranged and I was silent but overjoyed insides, quietly watching those guys taking measurement of my spare land. They also took a detailed notice of rusting barn and the very next day they came up with real big plans. They explained to me the whole process, gave an estimated completion time and then they were staring at me just waiting for my go. What in the world could stop me from saying lets go and they went like daggers from the bows. Every person took charge of his duties and started working at once.

Though it was drastic measure but let me explain it in my words what they did. It of course requires too much care and vast experience to build good horse arena surfaces, but generally saying they performed three major steps.

Firs sept was digging and leveling the field to properly laydown rest of the layers. They did it faster than I expected the covered the whole ground with rolling stones, Leveled them and the laid down a layer of membrane over the stone. And I began to feel like things are getting in shape.

applying an appropriate layer. Next sept was quite simiple to me and that was laying down silica sand over the membrane. They explained to me it is not as simple as it looks. It takes much care in the selection of sand and evenly.

And then come the final and the most exiting stept of applying a rubber layer over it. Then nicely spreading and made my dream come true with that. Its hard to believe and still surpicess me and my friends that is that same backyard wher you could not even walk comfortbaly. Now now I can ride smothly. Me and my horses are really thankful to these guys. They have applied good PVC and Rubber layers over the barn and gave it a much longer life. It was really a satisfactory work.

About write

I write because I believe it is the best way of depicting my inner self. I have been writing for long on several topics and issues that I observe around me. To me, writing is similar to speaking but to a bigger audience. British peoples love for riding was convincing enough, so I decided to write about horse riding & equestrian surface, and I have put my efforts to convey my message to the readers and to deliver as much information possible, in my blog so, that it may amuse as well as add to the readers knowledge.

Sunday, March 18, 2007

Bob Woolmer, Pakistan‘s cricket coach died at a university hospital in Kingston, Jamaica earlier today. Woolmer was found unconscious in his room at the Pegasus Hotel at 10:45 Sunday morning, only hours after Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup exit at the hands of Ireland.

After being found by hotel workers in his room, he was rushed to the emergency department at the University Hospital in Kingston, but doctors where not able to save him. Team spokesman Parvez Mir reported that when he was found “He had blood on him and there was vomit on the walls.”

Mir also told media that Woolmer suffered from a medical condition, but that it was too early to decide whether or not it had anything to do with his death.

Woolmer played 19 Tests for England and was the coach for Warwickshire and South Africa before becoming coach for Pakistan in 2004. He was to remain coach until after the 2007 World Cup, and was tipped to replace Duncan Fletcher as the coach of England after his contract with the PCB expired.

China warns US to avoid trade confrontation

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Speaking in Washington Tuesday at the conclusion of the China-U.S. trade summit, Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi warned the U.S. not to pursue a ‘blame game’ in continued trade negotiations. “We should not easily blame the other side for our own domestic problems,” Wu said, speaking through an interpreter. “Confrontation does no good at all to problem-solving.”

The valuation of the Chinese Yuan has been closely tied to the U.S. Dollar for years. Critics charge that this resulted in a relatively low value, making Chinese goods cheaper in the U.S., contributing to the current trade imbalance that favours China.

Although the Chinese government expanded the band in which the Yuan can float (relative to the U.S. Dollar) from 0.3 percent to 0.5 percent last Friday, critics say the measure doesn’t go far enough to address the U.S. trade deficit. Members of the U.S. Congress have blamed China’s policy of currency manipulation for the rising trade imbalance and a 16 percent drop in manufacturing jobs since 2000. In 2006, U.S. imports from China exceeded exports by US$232.5 billion, almost one third of the total trade deficit of US$765.3 billion.

In April, the U.S. Department of Commerce filed a WTO piracy complaint against China. Subsequently, China has agreed to talks and has issued some internal guidelines to address the issue. Wu said that both sides should “firmly oppose trade protectionism.” She said that any effort to “politicize” the economic relationship between the two nations would be “absolutely unacceptable.”

“The Chinese government will agree to U.S. demands” on piracy, predicted Albert Louie, in April, about the upcoming talks. Louie is the managing partner of A. Louie Associates, an anti-piracy company in based in China. “There is no question the government wants to crack down on counterfeiters. What remains in question is the consistency of enforcement,” he added.

The U.S. delegation also highlighted food safety as a concern with imports from China. The example of melamine-tainted pet food ingredients imported from China recently was used as an example of weak health and environmental controls in China. U.S. trade delegate Susan Schwab said the issue of food safety was raised by Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns and Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt. “This is not necessarily reflective of more protectionism or anti-Chinese sentiment, but rather that there are concerns there and we need to be responsive,” said Schwab.

It is hoped that breakthroughs will be reached on issues such as U.S. complaints of high Chinese import duties on U.S. energy technology products and the restriction on U.S. airline flights to China.

In the US Congress, a number of potential bills that would impose trade restrictions on China, are being pursued. Recently, a trade panel voted to impose a 44.3 percent tariff on polyester imports. Meanwhile, the Bush administration increased duties on certain types of glossy paper from China. A bill imposing 27 percent tariff on all Chinese goods has been proposed in Congress but hasn’t yet passed.

“The frustration that I and many of my colleagues in the Senate feel is that China is not satisfying its obligations as a member of the WTO and as a major beneficiary of open trade,” wrote Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, in a letter sent to Wu in advance of the summit.

Will Athletes Keeping Virginity Until Marriage Influence Kids?

Click Here To Find Out More About:

By Everett Johnson

Many honorable things can be said about athletes like Tim Tebow and Lolo Jones who have sworn to be celibate. But can their views and ideals rub off on the next generation?

A plethora of parents are sure to find supporting athletes who support abstinence a great idea. Yet the view from the kids that look up to them is unclear.

With all the exposure to role models such as rappers, singers, and actors/actresses, you would think the idea of celibacy or keeping virginity sounds like a crude joke to today’s youth. But you might be surprised by what the kids actually have on their minds dealing with the subject of keeping virginity.

‘I think you should just wait until you get married,’ says 9-year-old Javante’. ‘It’s what the Bible says and if it’s in the Bible then it must be the right idea.’

Miles Authorlee, a father of two, says, ‘You have to really respect guys like A.C. Green, who are the most eligible bachelors on the planet and still they choose to keep their virginity until they’re married. Of course I’m OK with letting my kids look up to them because they are positive role models.’

You will have to look far and wide to find a parent who is against the idea of keeping virginity and those who support it, but finding youth who oppose that notion may not be that hard.

‘I don’t know, I guess you just let what happens happen. I can say I support it, but temptation is everywhere, especially in high school,’ says 16-year-old Ronald.

Ronald went on to explain that when he was eight years old the idea of abstinence was something he thought he would stick with, but now since he has entered high school he has been inundated with all kinds of temptation from his peers.

We all know how big of a deal peer pressure is and what it can do to a young mind. Could it be that kids’ views and opinions change when they get to high school largely due to peer pressure?

‘I’ve had a lot of temptations being on the basketball team, and I frankly don’t know how Tebow has done it. You really have to be a strong individual to keep steadfast on such a promise,’ says sophomore Houston Sterling High School guard Javier.

There are however some youth that are content with the idea of keeping virginity.

Although there haven’t been many athletes besides Green, Tebow, Jones and supposedly every Brigham Young University athlete except Brandon Davies who have been hip to the idea of keeping virginity, some youth these days have other role models.

‘My parents are my role models. They have instilled the idea of keeping virginity in my brain. I really plan to stick with my vow of abstinence,’ says Fort Bend (Texas) Willowridge High School sophomore forward Jonathan.

‘I plan to stay (celibate until) marriage like my father told me. I feel pressure to violate that promise every day but I feel I am mentally equipped to deal with anything the devil throws at me,’ says Fort Bend (Texas) Marshall High School volleyball player Anita.

There are many views on the idea of keeping virginity in the sports world, and there are few athletes who can be looked upon as a role model who take on that challenge.

One thing for sure is that those who practice it have the utmost respect for being an individual and staying true to themselves.

The view of a role model switches from parent to celebrity often in a child’s life, yet a child is more likely to follow the example given to them at home.

Although athletes like Tebow are great, youth are more likely to accept the idea of keeping virginity if it is sold to them by their parents not the media or any other source.

Augusten Burroughs on addiction, writing, his family and his new book

Friday, October 12, 2007

I had an unofficial phone call from Gay Talese last Tuesday. He had just flown back from Colombia and he was cranky. “I’m happy to do an interview with you,” he said, “but what the hell could you ask me that’s not already out there? Have you even bothered to look?!”

“Jeez, Mr. Talese, lots of things,” was my response. I lied. The truth is that when I call people to interview them, I do not have a set of preconceived questions. My agenda is to talk to them and gain a sense of who they are; to flesh them out as humans. To find out what they think about the world around them at that moment. With Gay Talese I had little interest in talking about Frank Sinatra Has a Cold and with Augusten Burroughs I had little interest in discussing Running with Scissors. I want to know what they think about things outside of the boxes people have placed them in.

With a memoirist like Burroughs, even this is a challenge. What parts of his life he has not written about himself, other interviewers have strip-mined. When we met for dinner at Lavagna in the East Village, I explained to Augusten this issue. I suggested we make the interview more of a conversation to see if that would be more interesting. “Instead of you in the catbird seat,” I said, “let’s just talk.”

We struck an instant rapport. What set out to be an hour and half interview over dinner had turned into four hours of discussion about our lives similarly lived. I removed half of the interview: the half that focused on me.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s conversation with writer Augusten Burroughs.

Eight men and several Spinka charities charged with tax fraud in Los Angeles

Monday, December 24, 2007

Eight men and five Brookyln-based Spinka charitable organizations have been charged with tax fraud and money laundering. Six have been arrested, and two are still at large.

The men charged are Naftali Tzi Weisz, 59, a Grand Rabbi from Brooklyn; Gabbai Moseh E. Zigelman, 60, also from Brooklyn and Weisz’ assistant; Yaacov Zeivald, 43, of Valley Village; Yosef Nachum Naiman, 55, of Los Angeles; Alan Jay Friedman, 43, of Los Angeles; Joseph Roth, 66, an international accounts manager at a bank in Israel from Tel Aviv; diamond merchant Moshe Arie Lazar, 60; and Jacob Ivan Kantor, 71, an attorney from Tel Aviv. The first six were arrested last Wednesday, and four of them have been released on bail. The FBI believes Lazar to be in Israel. Kantor is also believed to be in Israel according to other reports.

The charitiable organizations named as defendants in the charges are Yeshiva Imrei Yosef, Yeshivath Spinka, Central Rabbinical Seminary, Machne Sva Rotzohn, and Mesivta Imrei Yosef Spinka. The FBI alleges that these charities issued fraudulent receipts for bogus charitable contributions and were the beneficiaries of fees charged for transfers of funds as part of a money laundering conspiracy.

By a 37-count grand jury indictment that was unsealed on Wednesday morning, Weisz and Zigelman are charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service and other crimes, 19 counts of mail fraud, one money laundering conspiracy count, 11 counts of international money laundering, and one count of operating an illegal money remitting business. Zigelman is in addition charged with two counts of aiding in the preparation of fraudulent income tax returns. Zeivald, Lazar, Naiman, and Friedman are charged in the main conspiracy count and with operating an illegal money remitting business. Zeivald is in addition charged with one count of mail fraud. Roth is charged in both conspiracy counts; several mail fraud counts; and several international money laundering counts. Kantor is charged in both of the conspiracy counts and several international money laundering counts.

The charges laid are that over a period of 10 years the conspirators solicited USD8.7 million in contributions to these charitable organizations, promising to secretly refund to the donors up to 95%, allowing the donors to claim the full amounts of the donations as tax deductions on their federal income tax returns. According to the FBI, this was done in two ways: Some donors received cash payments through an underground money transfer network involving Zeivald, Naiman, Friedman, and Lazar, some of whom operated businesses in and around the Los Angeles jewelry district. Other donors were reimbursed via loans made from the United States branch of an Israeli bank, organized by Roth and Kantor and secured on funds secretly held in that bank in Israel, to which the donations had been sent via wire transfer.

Several of the Brooklyn charitable organizations are schools. One such is Yeshiva Imrei Yosef, a private Orthodox Jewish school for boys in grades PK–12 with 312 students, which is one of 5000 such organizations approved for charitable donations by the Jewish Community Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco. The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles draws a parallel between these charges and the creation of bogus schools in the case of New Square, quoting Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University, as saying “I think that in Eastern Europe, especially where corruption was rampant, it was very common for Jews to engage in, shall we say, ‘extra-legal activities’ when they believed they were doing so not for their personal gain but for the good of the community or for some higher purpose.”

His observation is that defrauding a corrupt government is part of the culture that has sometimes been carried in to the United States, and that people justify it when they believe that the money is going towards Jewish education. “I think the idea is that Jewish education is so important and so expensive and the folks say to themselves, ‘we’re forced to pay for public education which we don’t use’, and they manage to sometimes justify in their own minds these kinds of activities that are for the sake of a holy end.”

Sarna states that violating the law is not condoned by Jewish communities in the U.S., a sentiment that has been echoed in reactions from the Los Angeles Jewish community, such as that by Rabbi Meyer H. May, president of the Rabbinical Council of California: “One thing is clear: The Orthodox community deplores any attempt to defraud the government of the United States, and there is no excuse for it, and there’s no rationalizations that are acceptable. […] It’s against the Torah and it’s against our moral foundation. At the same time, regarding these specific individuals, they should be allowed to have a fair trial, as everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”

The FBI’s press release contains a similar reminder of the presumption of innocence.

Calls by the New York Times were unable to obtain any comments on the case from the defendants.
