Australian Parliament hears reply to Budget

Thursday, May 11, 2006

The Australian House of Representatives heard the traditional right-of-reply to the Budget released May 9, from the Australian Labor Party, led by Kim Beazley (Labor, Brand), plus Budget replies from minor parties in the Australian Senate.

While the Budget is politically popular, having as one of its main features significant tax reform, Beazley focused on the omissions in the Budget, such as the failure to address a skills shortage.

England: Fire at London Zoo kills aardvark, meerkats believed dead

Sunday, December 24, 2017

Fire broke out at London Zoo on Saturday morning, severely damaging a cafe and shop and killing an aardvark. Zoo officials said four meerkats were missing and were also presumed to be dead.

The fire, mostly in the Animal Adventure cafe and shop, also spread to a nearby petting area. Reportedly, 72 firefighters with ten fire engines fought the blaze for about three hours starting shortly after 6:00 am to bring it under control. A spokesperson for the Fire Brigade stated that when they arrived, the fire was already “very well developed”. According to the ambulance service, two people were treated for minor injuries, six for smoke inhalation, with one taken to hospital. A statement from the zoo said, regarding animal fatalities, “Sadly our vets have confirmed the death of our nine-year-old aardvark, Misha. There are also four meerkats unaccounted for at this stage, and we have limited access to site to confirm this.” Other animals were said to be apparently unaffected.

The zoo reported quick response by zoo security guards and by animal care staff who are housed at the zoo, which is in Regents Park; they moved animals to safety. A dog walker, Adnan Abdul Husein, told the BBC he had first noticed heavy smoke and alerted zoo security guards.

Zoo officials initially said the zoo would be closed “until further notice” but later announced it would reopen today, Christmas Eve.

Dental Appointment Reward

Dental Appointment Reward

by

Lavonna Boback

The Dentist: Here we are again. Time to see or Orem Dentist. That six months flies by it seems. I can\’t say that I look forward to these dental appointments, but I am sold on the idea of it being an integral part of our overall health. You might say that oral and dental health affects my overall health. Have you ever had a tooth ache, or an infection in a tooth? Even if you don\’t care about dental health on a regular basis, when one of these issues occur, your oral health care becomes vital.

The Orem dentist that I go to, is a very patient dentist, a local dental health care professional with a sense of calm about him, but he cannot emphasize enough about the need to care for our teeth. I am sure that all dentists are the same, in their emphasis on oral heath care and regular dental appointments. My dentist wishes that he could follow each of his patients home and direct them each day in the care of their oral health and hygiene. That would be a little hard, as he has a dental practice to run. I am sure that dentistry can be a frustrating industry to be involved with at times.

So it comes down to us caring enough about our dental health to do what it takes to stay healthy. This means not only brushing at least twice a day, but flossing everyday as well. Flossing not only cleans out between your teeth, it also keeps your gums built up and healthy strong according to the dentist. Don\’t ask me how, but my local dentist in Orem couldn\’t stress this enough. It is also important in your overall health, to have scheduled meal and snacking times, as your teeth need periods of time through the day where they are not taking on any food (sugar). Grazers, those who snack continuously throughout the day, generally have more dentistry issues. This is according to several dentists I have encountered.

Pretending to be a Dentist myself, this is what I have done to help myself care about better oral and dental health. Believe me, it takes a lot of practice to develop dental health care habits. But I am proud to say that I have done just that. I have managed to make Dental Flossing and brushing a part of my everyday routine. I am conscious of what and when I put things into my mouth. And how did I manage to convince myself of the importance of this? It\’s all about the reward for me. Yes I care about my health, and yes I care about feeling and looking my best, I even care about what my dentist thinks, but in order to motivate myself into accomplishing all of my dentistry tasks, I need more than that. So now I get a reward, not a prize from the dentist, but a prize from myself.

When we visit dentists, it costs money. Even though some of us have insurance, it can cost plenty for the percentages that are not covered. Usually, however, a check-up is covered. So this is the deal that I made with myself. I figured out an average of how much I was paying in dental charges each year. That is the amount that I pay myself for not having any cavities or any oral health care issues. I use that money to buy myself something I have wanted. It is the system that gets me to the dentist and keeps me taking care of my dental needs. My local city dentist thinks it is a terrific idea.

Pretending to be a Dentist myself, this is what I have done to help myself care about better oral and dental health. Believe me, it takes a lot of practice to develop…. Learn more at

Fire burns home of late singer Johnny Cash

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

A fast-moving fire engulfed the home of late singer Johnny Cash on Tuesday. The lake-side home, located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was the home of the late singer and his wife, June Carter, from the late 1960s until their deaths in 2003.

The home was purchased by former Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb in 2006, and was undergoing renovations at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but it is believed that a flammable wood preservative that construction workers had applied contributed to the speed in which the flames spread. Firefighters responded within 5 minutes of the fire breaking out. No workers were killed in the fire, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

“Maybe it’s the good Lord’s way to make sure that it was only Johnny’s house,” said Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys, who lived down the road from Cash. Neighbor Marty Stewart said “So many prominent things and prominent people in American history took place in that house—everyone from Billy Graham to Bob Dylan went into that house.” The home was where Cash wrote many of his hit songs, and appeared in the Cash music video for “Hurt“.

US Congresswoman Jackie Speier comments about Obamacare, Paralympics

Saturday, November 9, 2013

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.
