Israel announces settlement expansion plans

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

The Israeli Interior Ministry has announced today that 900 new housing units are slated to be built by Israeli officials at the Gilo settlement located in East Jerusalem.

A press release by the Interior Ministry read, “The planning and construction committee has authorised the construction of 900 housing units in the Gilo neighbourhood in Jerusalem.” Annexed after the 1967 war, East Jerusalem is what Palestinians still hope to make the capital of their future state. However, the current Israeli government has made claim to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. “Jerusalem is Israel’s capital and will remain as such,” said government spokesman Mark Regev.

Earlier this month the Palestinian Authority insisted that all negotiations with Israel would be put permanently on hold until settlement expansion and home demolitions were halted. The UN reports that 1,500 home demolition orders in East Jerusalem are currently pending in Israeli courts. At least 600 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes in East Jerusalem since the beginning of this year. Nearly 500,000 Israelis live in more than 100 different settlements located in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

U.S envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, asked President Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel settlement expansion plans, however his request went unheeded. Settlement expansion has soured relations between the U.S and Israel, however Israel is still the largest recipient of U.S aid annually. Responding to requests by the U.S government that settlement expansion be halted Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said that he, “strongly objects to the American demand to halt construction in Jerusalem and will allow construction for Jews, Muslims, and Christians in any part of Jerusalem without prejudice. The demand to halt construction by religion is not legal in the United States or in any other free place in the world.”

Under international law building settlements in occupied territory is illegal. The UN has deemed Israeli settlements to be a violation of the Geneva Convention.

Canada’s west coast battles high winds

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Currently, there are blackouts, heavy rain, and high winds in British Columbia. Over 220,000 BC Hydro customers have no power. Buildings have already collapsed and trees have been knowed down. Five Vancouver rivers were in danger of flooding, which rain fell at 10 mm an hour for more than six hours at midday.

The steel frame of a four-storey building under construction in Vancouver collapsed. Construction workers escaped injury, luckily they were on a coffee break at the time of the incident. The steel frame crushed cars in a parking lot and missed a truck driver.

Citizens had to evacuate a subdivision of 30 homes. The winds smashed trees into houses in West Vancouver.

“We have some real fears here with electrical problems,” said Captain Rob Jones Cook of the Vancouver Fire Department. “This is impinging on electrical poles and lamp standards. We also have hydro bus lines running down two sides of the building.” The Vancouver Fire Department says they have no idea as to why the building collapsed.

Winds are gusting at more than 100 kilometres an hour (62 mph) in some areas and rainfall amounts of 50 to 130 millimetres.

According BC Hydro spokeswoman Elisha Moreno, the hardest-hit areas are Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Mission, B.C. “We’re trying to be optimistic and hoping it’s by end of day today, but there may very well be customers that are into the early-morning hours before restoration,” Moreno said.

Extensive ferry cancellations, road closures, and massive power outages are in effect until the storm ends.

The RCMP have advised people to stay home and off the highway.

The same heavy weather has also affected nearby Washington State, USA.

How To Save Money Every Month 3 Steps To Control Your Buying Spree And Grow Your Savings

By Nelson Berry

Do you find yourself earning a lot but saving only a small amount of money every month? Do you find yourself sometimes wondering where the rest of your earnings went? Even people who earn the same amount of money don’t all get rich. Sometimes, it’s all a matter of who manages their money well.

If you really want to see your savings grow, you need strict money management skills. If not, you’ll be wondering where all your efforts to earn go.

If you’re actually wondering that, here are some smart money management tips on how you can manage your money and grow your savings.

1. Prioritize important bills. Every month, set aside a set amount for your monthly bills. Run through the usual bills you pay each month and check whether they are really important. Usually, the important bills include your household utilities, cellphone bills, cable TV bills, grocery expenses, gas/transportation expense, medications/vitamins, and any insurance plan you invested on.

Compute how much all the important expenses add up to every month. Pay them immediately once you get your salary. Don’t wait for the due dates of your bills; chances are, you’ll spend the money on something else. Once you’ve paid off all expenses, what remains of your salary can go straight to your savings.

2. Cancel unnecessary expenses. If you have a gym membership, ask yourself if you actually go to the gym. If not, you’re paying unnecessarily for something you don’t maximize. If you have club memberships and magazine subscriptions, ask yourself if you really get something valuable from those expenditures. If not, cancel them out. You can most likely live without them anyway.

In fact, think carefully if you can make do without some of your usual expenses. For example, people these days spend most of their time out of the home. And since you have your cellphone anyway, you can even have your house phone cancelled too.

3. Change the way you feel when you get your hands on your salary. The most effective way to save is to set aside a set amount of money from your monthly earnings. Unfortunately, for some people, saving money is easier said than done. Most people treat their salary as if it has ‘spend while supply last’ stamped on it. Once they get their earnings every month, they immediately come up with the list of things they need to buy. Afterwards, they will be wondering if they really needed what they bought. The worst part is when they suddenly need extra or emergency money; without any savings, they won’t have a backup supply of cash when the need arises.

The point is, if the money is in your hands, that does not mean you have to spend it.

One way to change your perception about your salary is to send subliminal messages to your subconscious, to put a stop to the buying and spending impulses that have set up shop in there. Your subconscious is what dictates most of your impulses and habits. So even if your conscious mind tells you to save, you somewhat subconsciously feel the freedom to spend when you get your hands on your salary. So you have to change your mind from the subconscious level. To do this, you need to send subliminal messages designed to make you a better manager of your money.

Here are some examples:

I manage money wisely.

I see my savings grow. I make smart decisions about money.

Oil facilities in Saudi Arabia hit by drone attacks

Sunday, September 15, 2019

Yesterday, oil facilities belonging to Saudi Arabia’s state-owned Saudi Aramco were hit by multiple drone strikes in a pre-dawn raid. The attacks triggered major fires at a processing plant and an oil field, which state media said were under control. The Yemen-based Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the attacks.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the attacks occurred at 4:00 A.M. local time (0100 UTC) and struck the largest processing plant at Abqaiq and the Khurais oil field. The oil field is about 160 km (100 miles) east of the capital, Riyadh. The agency did not mention if there were casualties, but said exports were continuing.

Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported both production and export of oil had been disrupted. Saudi officials subsequently said 5.7 million barrels of per-day production had been disrupted. This would be nearly half of Saudi Arabia’s entire production and around five percent on a global basis.

Speaking on al-Masirah TV in Yemen, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said it had carried out the attack using ten drones. According to him, it was among the largest Houthi operations inside of Saudi Arabia and was accomplished with the help of “honourable people inside the kingdom”.

“These attacks are our right, and we warn the Saudis that our targets will keep expanding”, Saree said. “We have the right to strike back in retaliation to the air strikes and the targeting of our civilians for the last five years.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted a message on Twitter blaming Iran for the attacks, saying there was “no evidence the attacks came from Yemen.” BBC’s Jonathan Marcus said questions remain how much direct Iranian assistance is received by the Houthis who are ideologically aligned with Iran.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia started supporting the government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi against the Houthi rebellion, providing airstrikes with the Royal Saudi Air Force. The United Nations called the resulting humanitarian crisis the worst in the world.

In 2006, Abqaiq was the target of an Al-Qaeda suicide attack.

U.S. warns of al Qaeda threat to stock trading and banking websites

Friday, December 1, 2006

The U.S. government warned private financial services that al Qaeda is planning a cyber attack on the U.S. stock and bank accounts, officials said on Thursday.

Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke says: “There is no information to corroborate this aspirational threat. As a routine matter and out of an abundance of caution, US-CERT issued the situational awareness report to industry stakeholders.”

The officials said that the attacks are aimed at destroying the databases of U.S. banking and stock market web sites. The Homeland Security group claims that the threat was for all of December.

A U.S. official said that the threat was posted on an website and called for the attack to avenge the imprisonment of Muslims in the Guantanamo detention camp.

Rosemary Cousin, Greens candidate in South Gippsland, Australia, speaks to Wikinews about democracy, transport, forests and other local issues

Sunday, October 3, 2021

Nominations were declared on September 21 for South Gippsland Shire’s upcoming council elections, to be held by post from October 5-22. A total of 24 people in the Australian council’s three wards have put themselves forward to stand as candidates. Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Rosemary Cousin, via email. Cousin is endorsed by the Australian Greens, and is contesting the Tarwin Valley ward, which elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council, and includes the towns of Leongatha and Mirboo North.

Helpful Tips For Finding An Electrician In Zionsville

byAlma Abell

Hiring an electrician is a safer and more effective method than attempting to do your own electrical repairs, which can actually end up making matters worse. If you have sudden or longstanding problems with the wiring in your home or office building, it is important to locate a professional electrician to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. Use the following helpful tips to find a qualified Electrician in Zionsville.

Check Credentials – An important aspect of choosing a qualified electrician is to check their credentials carefully. The potential danger and liability issues that can arise during electrical work make it important for you to verify that the person who wants to do the work is properly licensed and insured. If you do not hire an electrician with the proper credentials, you run the risk of not getting quality work and suffering tremendous loss if anything goes wrong.

Use References – A great way to find a well-qualified electrician is by asking the prospective electrician for references. Electricians that do quality work and provide good customer service always get many positive references from previous customers. Ask the electrician for references in order to find out their record of accomplishment before hiring them for a job.

Ask for Quotes – Although it is not the ultimate deciding factor, a simple way to help you choose the best electrician for your needs is to ask for quotes from each one and compare the details. If all other aspects of what each technician you have in mind has to offer are relatively equal, a better quote on price and the work planned from one of them may help you to make a final choice.

Read Testimonials – A simple way to find out the quality of an electrician is to read testimonials provided by past customers. If the electrician does not have his or her own website or other format of this information available, performing a simple web search for the electrician business name should reveal useful information.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Documents reveal al-Qaeda wants war between U.S. and Iran, Iraq insurgency weakening

Friday, June 16, 2006

Documents found at the hideout of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi revealed al-Qaeda‘s desire to force a war between the U.S. and Iran. The document was translated by Iraqi National Security Adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie, but the authenticity of the information could not be confirmed to be from al-Qaeda.

The documents reveal that al-Zarqawi was planning to destroy the relationship between the Shi’ite Iraqis and the United States. The document also said the U.S. military was hurting the insurgency by seizure of weapons, disrupting their financial outlets, massive arrests, and training Iraqi security forces.

The translated document said, “Generally speaking and despite the gloomy present situation, we find that the best solution in order to get out of this crisis is to involve the U.S. forces in waging a war against another country or any hostile groups.”

Mowaffaq al-Rubaie said, “These documents have given us the edge over al-Qaeda and (they) also gave us the whereabouts of their network, of their leaders, of their weapons and the way they lead the organization and the whereabouts of their meetings.”
