Priests jailed for $8.6 million theft

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Two Roman Catholic Church priests in the United States, were sentenced to prison for theft. They were convicted of stealing over US$8 million from St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Delray Beach, Florida.

Retired Monsignor John A. Skehan and Reverend Francis B. Guinan were accused in 2006 of misappropriation of funds from the church collection plates and church bequests.

Judge Jeffrey Colbath handed down the sentence on Skehan who received 14 months in prison followed by seven years on probation. He plead guilty in January 2009 to grand theft of over $100,000. The defense, prosecutors and Diocese of Palm Beach had requested probation for Skehan, who is 81 years old. Skehan has paid back $750,000.

“The court finds the defendant is not merely sorry because he got caught, but is truly shameful, embarrassed and remorseful,” Judge Jeffrey Colbath said. “The crime of the defendant was pure greed unmasked. There was not a shred of moral necessity to excuse the defendant’s crime.”

Circuit Judge Krista Marx sentenced Guinan who received four years in prison and was found guilty of theft of just under $100,000.

“No matter how many good works you have performed in your many years as a priest, your legacy will always be one of thievery and deceit,” Judge Krista Marx said.Skehan had invested in a Co. Clare cottage, a Co. Kilkeeny pub, and two penthouse condominiums. As well as real estate he had purchased a collection of gold coins worth around $300,000. Both priests had embarked on gambling holidays and real estate ventures.

100% Free Dating—The Pros And Cons

Submitted by: David V B

So you see an ad for a dating site—and you get excited. It says quite clearly that the site is free, which makes it great for those without credit cards…but there are a few pros and cons to every endeavor and unfortunately, dating sites have their own. So what do you need to know about 100% free dating?

Cons:

First of all, let’s examine the cons. For one, teenagers have easy access to free dating sites. Not always with their proper age stated (since most dating sites won’t allow it). You can look at it anyway that you want, but it’s normally a bad thing. Most of the time, the teenagers are there in an attempt to gain things such as phone cards in exchange for pics. If you doubt the person’s age in any way, shape or form, then completely ignore them. The last thing that you need is to get in trouble when you find out their real age.

Next, you also have to understand that this gives access to some unsavory characters as well. Keep in mind that this is also true of paid dating sites—a 100% free dating site isn’t necessarily going to be worse because of better access. They just have the same problems as paid dating sites. Keep this in mind as you create your profile.

Pros:

There are LOADS of pros to using a 100% free dating site—you just have to know what you’re doing. First of all, you can connect quickly and easily with those around the world. A credit card isn’t nearly as common as you might think in some parts of the world. This gives you access to a wider selection of people and allows you to learn about them culturally as well as emotionally.

Next, you also are able to talk to a wide variety of people—and you don’t have to worry about who the website “matches” you with. Sometimes opposites attract! Keep this in mind as you search for dates.

You’re also able to find people locally, in addition to those across the world. You get not only one experience, but many.

You don’t have to deal with the face to face rejection of real life dating. Instead of the painful “It’s not me…”, you just have to stop contacting them. It’s less personal and a lot less hurtful.

It widens your horizons. People may be looking for certain traits in a mate that they didn’t know you had. It’s a lot easier to show off your soft side online than it is in real life.

Take your time when exploring a new site. You may not realize it, but different groups tend to lean towards certain sites. You may find that there aren’t many people looking for a serious relationship on one site while there are plenty looking for misses or mister right. Once you have an idea of what people are looking for on the 100% free dating site, you’re good to go out there and get searching!

Iraqi elections kept low-key, but secure, in Paris

Saturday, January 29, 2005

Fourteen countries outside of Iraq have been selected for the installation of polling stations for the Iraqi National Assembly election. Among these, Paris, capital city of France, will welcome voters from France, Belgium, and Switzerland.

While the event has not been kept secret, the French government and media have been quite discreet about it. The polling station has been installed in an unused elementary school in a calm residential neighbourhood of the XIIIe arrondissement, without fanfare. Most inhabitants are not even aware of its presence – that is, until they notice the unusual deployment of police and come across the posters written in French and Arabic. Despite the discretion, the sight of police guarding a polling station is striking in a country where elections are a calm affair on a Sunday, and polling stations, most of which are installed in schools, are only noticeable because of the official billboards carrying the candidates’ posters.

Security measures have been taken – metallic barriers prevent parking in and around the front and back entrances to the station, and CRS riot police with bulletproof vests guard the entrances.Still, overall, the security measures remain limited. Traffic flows in the street, passers-by freely walk in front of the station entrance, no display of heavy weapons. This contrasts with the use of military troops and deployments of gendarmes mobiles that France used in its Vigipirate anti-terror plan following the Islamist terror bombings that it suffered in 1995, or the typical security measures kept around possible terror targets such as the embassies of Israel and the United States of America. This time, military cars and a handful of soldiers were seen in the morning, but were gone in the afternoon.

Outsourcing It Services In Boulder

byAlma Abell

Small businesses and start-up organizations rarely have the funding needed to have an on-site 24 hour IT department. This often means that many companies are struggling to do the best they can with what they have and rarely are able to capitalize on the opportunities the technology they own is capable of performing. When problems occur, their decision to save money by fixing the issue themselves often leads to added expenses and even more costly downtime.

The fact is, almost no one is capable of running the IT end of a business except an IT professional. Understanding how to navigate a computer or the Internet does not make a person an expert on how these systems work or how to set up networks, telecom systems or interfaces.

If the words “Server Virtualization” are both identifiable words to you, but seem to make no sense when spoken together, you need assistance from a company that can help you to understand.

But why pay someone a full time salary to manage your IT Services when there are businesses dedicated to providing this service and are available 24-hours a day to help? IT Services in Boulder can help you to make the most out of your business and the technology you have invested in, find solutions that will save you time and money and keep you operating without interruption every day.

They can help with the setup of new systems or maintain the existing equipment and systems you already have in place. Outsourcing may have a bad reputation in some instances, but here it makes it possible for a small company to compete equally with larger businesses and use their savings to help their company grow.

IT Services in Boulder are the best answer for technology related questions. They are perfect for any size company, large or small, regardless of the industry they work in. If you are struggling to maintain the payroll for a full IT team of your own or you are attempting to set up systems you really do not understand, look into outsourcing to see what benefits it holds for you.

Alzheimer’s disease reversed in mice using caffeine

Monday, July 6, 2009

Two studies published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease point to caffeine as reducing beta amyloid, a protein that in sticky clumps called senile plaque is a sign of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers had 55 mice who were genetically altered and exhibited memory loss at age 18 to 19 months (close to about age 70 in a human). Half the mice received the equivalent of five 8 ounce cups of regular coffee a day or 500 milligrams, about the same as in two cups of specialty coffees like Starbucks, in their drinking water. This half of the mice recovered and had memories as sharp as older mice who did not have dementia.

“The new findings provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable ‘treatment’ for established Alzheimer’s disease, and not simply a protective strategy,” said Gary Arendash, PhD, a University of South Florida neuroscientist with the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and a lead author of a study. “That’s important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people, it easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process.”

The researchers hope to begin human trials based on their two months work in mice. Neil Hunt, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society said, “[M]uch more research is needed to determine whether drinking coffee has the same impact in people. It is too soon to say whether a cup of coffee is anything more than a pleasant pick me up.”

US unemployment rate reaches 9.8%

Friday, October 2, 2009

Companies in the United States are shedding more jobs, pushing the country’s unemployment rate to a 26-year high of 9.8%.

The US Labor Department said on Friday that employers cut 263,000 jobs in September, with companies in the service industries — including banks, restaurants and retailers — hit especially hard. This is the 21st consecutive month of job losses in the country.

The United States has now lost 7.2 million jobs since the recession officially began in December 2007. The new data has sparked fears that unemployment could threaten an economic recovery. Top US officials have warned that any recovery would be slow and uneven, and some have predicted the unemployment rate will top 10% before the situation improves.

“Continued household deleveraging and rising unemployment may weigh more on consumption than forecast, and accelerating corporate and commercial property defaults could slow the improvement in financial conditions,” read a report by the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, predicting that unemployment will average 10.1% by next year and not go back down to five percent until 2014.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com, said that “it’s a very fragile and tentative recovery. Policy makers need to do more.”

“The number came in weaker than expected. We saw a lot of artificial involvement by the government to prop up the markets, and now that that is starting to end, the private sector isn’t yet showing signs of life,” said Kevin Caron, a market strategist for Stifel, Nicolaus & Co.

Also on Thursday, the US Commerce Department said factory orders fell for the first time in five months, dropping eight-tenths of a percent in August. Orders for durable goods — items intended to last several years (including everything from appliances to airliners) — fell 2.6%, the largest drop since January of this year.

The US government has been spending billions of dollars — part of a $787 billion stimulus package — to help spark economic growth. There have been some signs the economy is improving.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday that spending on home construction jumped in August for its biggest increase in 16 years. A real estate trade group, the National Association of Realtors, said pending sales of previously owned homes rose more than 12 percent in August, compared to August 2008.

A separate Commerce Department report said that consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, rose at its fastest pace in nearly eight years, jumping 1.3 percent in August.

Other reports have provided cause for concern. A banking industry trade group said Thursday the number of US consumers making late payments, or failing to make payments, on loans and credit cards is on the rise. A survey by a business group, the Institute for Supply Management, Thursday showed US manufacturing grew in September, but at a slower pace than in August when manufacturing increased for the first time in a year and a half.

Stock markets reacted negatively to the reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 41 points in early trading, reaching a level of 9467. This follows a drop of 203 points on Thursday, its largest loss in a single day since July. The London FTSE index fell 55 points, or 1.1%, to reach 4993 points by 15.00 local time.

UK study highlights child abuse by humanitarian workers

Thursday, May 29, 2008

A study by the non-profit organisation Save the Children UK claims that a number of aid workers and peacekeepers from organisations such as the United Nations and Save the Children itself have engaged in sexual abuse of children in the course of their humanitarian efforts. The study also says that many of these incidents remain unreported, and those involved often go unpunished.

The study was based on field data from Sudan, Ivory Coast and Haiti, where they held focus groups followed by in-depth interviews. In 20 of the 38 focus groups, United Nations representatives were the main perpetrators of sexual abuse, possibly due to the larger number of peacekeepers than aid workers, but 23 organisations were identified as being involved across the three countries.

While 14 and 15 year olds were the most common victims, the study found cases of abuse in children as young as 6. Most offenders were men, and most of the victims were girls. One 14-year-old boy who works in a peacekeeping camp on the Ivory Coast told the study that “[o]ften it will be between eight and 10 men who will share two or three girls”.

An “overwhelming” majority of those interviewed said they would never report a case of abuse, and did not know of anyone who had reported a case, despite more than half knowing of incidents of sexual abuse, and many knowing of 10 or more. The study reported that unless this silence was dealt with, any attempts to eliminate the abuse would be “fundamentally flawed”.

“[The U.N.] will very carefully investigate and whenever there is necessary matters we will take necessary measures from this”.

In response to the study, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said that the organisation’s policy on such abuse was “zero tolerance.” The U.N. “will very carefully investigate and whenever there is necessary matters we will take necessary measures from this”. Both Save the Children and the U.N. have pointed out that, while it does not reduce the seriousness of the offences, the offenders represent a small proportion of all peacekeepers and aid workers in foreign countries. As the U.N. does not have any prosecutory powers of its own, peacekeepers found to be involved in child sexual abuse are either fired or sent back to their home countries to face prosecution.
