Eight dead and two missing after cargo ship fire in Kaliningrad, Russia

Sunday, June 8, 2008

Eight people are dead and two more are missing and presumed dead after an explosion and fire on a cargo ship undergoing repairs at a naval dockyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.

The container ship MV Yenisey was the scene of an explosion while in drydock at about 3:00 p.m. Moscow time (11:00 GMT). Ten people were missing after the explosion. It was confirmed today that the eighth body has been recovered, and the remaining two are thought to be dead as well. Three more were injured.

Captain 1st Rank Igor Dygalo, acting as a navy spokesperson, said “Each family of the victims of the fire on the Yenisey civilian vessel will be paid more than a million rubles.” This makes their compensation roughly equivalent to US$43,000.

Dygolo said that the dockyard, in the closed military town of Baltiysk, near Kaliningrad, had been leased to the Yenisey’s St Petersburg owner, a private company, who were conducting the work themselves. He said an investigation has been launched by the navy led by top admiral Vladimir Vysotsky.

Vysotski himself has indicated that serious safety legislation breaches concerning welding regulations by both the vessel’s owner and the naval dockyard’s bosses. He did not go into details, but RIA Novosti claimed that a source at the dockyard said a gas burner applied to the roof of a fuel tank to heat and therefore loosen its bolts had triggered the disaster.

Today is an official day of mourning for Kaliningrad Region to mark the deaths.

Teen Bras And Preteen Lingerie

By Carmen Petitclerc

Preteen or teen bras have various aliases. Sometimes they are called training bras, starter bras, first bras and sometimes bralets or preteen bras. Customarily girls begin to require a bra between the ages of 11 to 13. Even though their bodies are not fully matured, some young girls decide that they should already be wearing one.

What A First Bra Should Be

It is important that a first bra not just look good, it must fit comfortably. Choosing appropriate bra styles with nice colors and some lace will also help a young girl become accustomed to wearing training bras. It will also help her feel more grown up, which of course is the goal of preteen lingerie.

Bra Sizes 101

Like womens brassieres, teen bras have a bra band size. The bra band attaches with hooks in the back and goes all the way around the torso with sizes that start at 28-30-32 etc. If the bra band is too tiny, then it will be too tight and could be uncomfortable. Alternately the band will lift in the back of it is too big. The bra hooks allow the tightening or loosening of the band length as needed.

The cup size is also worth noting. The bra cups support and cover the breasts. Bra cups are measured in letters like AA-A-B and such. If, a starter bra is too small the breast tissue will start to spill out on the sides or top of the bra. On the other hand, if the cup size is too big, it will become wrinkled and show underneath the clothes.

Bra straps are an important part of first bras. It’s important to adjust the bra straps accordingly. It is important that the bra straps are not too long or too short. Why? The bra band will start to creep up the back if the straps are too short. The bra straps should be straightened so that they are a comfortable, and the bra brand should rest straight all the way around.

Teen Bras In The Change Room

The best way to know if a teen bra is a comfortable fit is to give it a try. Walk around in it for several minutes. Sit down. Reach your arms straight up and out. How is it? If, it sags or pulls, simply move on to the next bra. You should not be able to feel a brassiere that fits properly.

It is a smart move not to buy too many teen bras at once. Why? During the teen years bra sizes can change frequently as the body develops.

Matching teen and preteen underwear are also an important part of teen lingerie. You can either choose teen panties, boy shorts, or briefs that complete the teen lingerie set. A matched bra and panty set is functional, stylish and a good idea. Showing young ladies how to match their bras, panties, camisoles, and teen lingerie will build character and self esteem as they mature into young women.

Retired U.S. vets sue Donald Rumsfeld for excessive service cutbacks

Tuesday, May 31, 2005

One thousand residents of the Defense Department-managed Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. filed a class-action lawsuit on May 24, asserting that the cut-backs in medical and dental services imposed by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld are illegal. The operating budget for the home was reduced from $63 million in 2004 to $58 million for 2005. The residents cite cuts in on-site X-ray, electrocardiogram, physical and dental services, and the closing of the home’s main clinic and an on-site pharmacy.

Chief Financial Officer Steve McManus responded that the changes not only save money but also achieved improved efficiencies. “We’re really trying to improve the benefits to our residents,” he said.

Most of the home’s costs are paid for by a trust fund and monthly fees paid by residents. By law, the Armed Forces Retirement Homes are required to fund, “on-site primary care, medical care and a continuum of long-term care services.”

Vestas delays closure of Newport plant

Friday, July 31, 2009

Vestas Wind Systems, whose closing wind turbine blade manufacturing centre in Newport, Isle of Wight, England remains the site of a occupation now in its 11th day, has suddenly announced that the consultation period preceding the closure of the plant has been extended, and that the plant will remain open until mid-August.

The announcement, which was reported not by Vestas but by the RMT, was described by RMT General Secretary Bob Crow as “another significant milestone in the fight to save the factory and 625 skilled manufacturing jobs in green energy.” The plant had been due to close today.

News of the delay comes hours after confused reports that Vestas was withholding redundancy payment for at least 525 of the workers whose jobs were lost. According to a report by the local newspaper the Isle of Wight County Press, cheques which employees had been expecting today did not arrive; instead, workers who contacted Vestas management were told they would not receive payment until an interview process had been completed, and that if they began new jobs before the interview process was over they would not receive their money. However, according to Ventnorblog, a local Isle of Wight blog which has been following the Vestas closure closely, the layoff process was being delayed because a majority of the Vestas employees were refusing to agree to the management’s redundancy plan.

The delay of the closure allows more time for the negotiation of potential solutions for the Newport plant to remain open. The Vestas occupiers and labour groups continue to favour nationalisation of the plant, with Socialist Party spokesman Nick Chaffey saying:

The courageous stand of the Vestas occupation and the huge support that stands alongside it from Vestas workers and beyond has rocked management and the government. With the vital support of the RMT and wider support from the trade union movement including PCS, POA and FBU, the workers’ demand for nationalisation is the only way to resolve this crisis.

In addition to the Vestas occupiers’ proposal that the factory be nationalised, Caroline Lucas, the MEP for South East England and a member of the Green Party, has proposed that Vestas employees should form a workers’ co-operative with government aid in order to keep the plant running. The Tory-dominated Isle of Wight Council has unanimously endorsed a resolution saying that the plant should stay open, and has called for new investors to take the Vestas plant over, as was done at a smaller Vestas plant in Scotland recently.

The news of the delay comes as workers at the plant accused Vestas management of harassing the families of the 24 remaining occupiers of the plant. Families of some occupiers were served with legal papers at their homes. One of the occupiers, Luke Paxton, left the factory on Thursday night in order to be re-united with his family; Paxton was checked for malnutrition and low blood sugar by paramedics but was not hospitalized, instead opting to go home. Paxton complained that Vestas management, while now providing hot food to the occupiers, were still under-feeding them; the RMT, which is providing legal aid to the Vestas workers, has accused Vestas management of violating the Human Rights Act by attempting to “starve the workers at Vestas into submission”.

Protesters in fancy dress were successful in sending food into the plant yesterday. Protesters dressed as a fantasy wizard and can-can dancers distracted police and company security guarding the fence which has been erected around the site while other protesters flung a bag of food and an electric kettle onto the balcony outside the office which has served as the occupiers’ home base inside the factory. No arrests were made but the protesters were removed from the factory grounds.

Requests for comment from Vestas management received no reply.

The No Bullshit Guide To Banishing Cellulite}

The no-bullshit guide to banishing cellulite

by

Kate Hanson

Cellulite. God help us, girls, practically none of us are immune. Apparently 9 out of every 10 women will have it at some point in their life. But what causes it and what can we do about it?

What is cellulite?Cellulite is just deposits of fat that push against the connective tissue beneath a person’s skin, which causes the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker and look lumpy.Several factors influence whether a person has cellulite and how much they have. Your genes, your gender, the amount of fat on your body, your age, and the thickness of your skin all come into play. Unfortunately, female hormones including oestrogen have a role to play in cellulite’s formation, which is why us girls suffer more. It also means that after you’ve had babies, you’re even more likely to have it.The bad news about cellulite…There aren’t any miracle products, treatments, or medicines that can make it go away. Some fancy salon treatments that promise to get rid of cellulite simply cause your skin to puff up through deep massaging, temporarily reducing the appearance of cellulite.Treatments like liposuction and mesotherapy (injection of drugs into cellulite) are either expensive, or dangerous or may produce only temporary improvement. Many doctors even warn that liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite because liposuction is designed to remove deep fat instead of cellulite, which is close to the skin.So what’s the good news about cellulite? If you, like me, are cursed with the dreaded orange peel, here’s what to do.Lose weightStands to reason, less fat, less cellulite. You can be skinny and still have it, but let’s face it, you’ll have less!Drink lots and lots of waterBeing adequately hydrated helps your body eliminate toxins.Stay calmStress hormones contribute to the formation of cellulite. Try a relaxation or yoga class.ExerciseImproving your circulation will help your body deal with the fatty deposits, and of course if you exercise your muscle tone will improve and you will lose weight, all of which will help.Dry skin brushingGet yourself a good brush (The Body Shop does them for under $30), and brush your whole body in long, sweeping strokes, from toes to chin. Aim towards your heart. This will help stimulate your circulation and support your lymph glands to eliminate excess fluid which can make you look lumpier.Have regular lymphatic drainage massagesThese will also help your lymph glands eliminate excess fluid.Eliminate processed foods and added salt from your dietSalt causes you to retain water which… well, you get the picture! You’d be amazed how much salt and fat is in pre-packed and processed foods. Stick to brown rice, steamed veggies and lean fish and meat. I like to season my meals with fresh herbs and lemon or lime juice. Yummy.Juniper berry essential oilI’ve made myself a massage oil containing juniper berry, which is a diuretic and stimulates the circulation. You add six drops to 10ml of a carrier oil such as almond oil, and massage into your thighs and tummy daily. Here’s the full recipe.Go to a naturopath for a herbal treatment containing horse chestnut and gotu kolaBoth are thought to have powerful anti-cellulite properties. I haven’t yet found a skin treatment containing these from a supplier I trust but I’m still looking!Ditch the coffee and alcohol – or have them only as treatsBoth will contribute to those dimply thighs! I’ve changed to decaf and I’m keeping my alcohol consumption to weekends only.Love yourself, cellulite and all!And one last thing… a few dimples on your thighs do not a make you a freak. Most women have cellulite and there’s more to life than obsessing over it. So put your bikini on and hit the beach with pride. As Body Shop founder Anita Roddick said, ‘There are millions of women who don’t look like supermodels, and only eight who do.’

Passionate about skincare and beauty, Kate was horrified when she found out about the toxic chemicals lurking in her favourite products. A passionate desire to educate others on how to make safer choices led to the birth of Ikigai,

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

IMF head remains in New York prison; charged over alleged hotel sex attack

Sunday, May 15, 2011

This sordid episode—no matter how it ultimately plays out—will spell the end of Strauss-Kahn as an effective leader of the IMF even if he retains his position, which is highly unlikely.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, remained in jail last night after being charged with sexually attacking a chambermaid at a New York City hotel. Strauss-Kahn has agreed to undergo forensic screening before he appears in court, and has vowed to “vigorously” defend himself against the charges, which are likely to create a leadership void at the IMF, disrupt emergency talks over the European debt crisis, and spell the end of his political career.

Strauss-Khan was the favourite candidate for the French presidency, and was expected to announce he would stand against Nicolas Sarkozy this month. But the allegations are expected to destroy the hopes of his supporters, increase infighting among the French left, and leave his political career in tatters. His arrest comes at a critical moment for the IMF, and will likely plunge efforts to stabilise the financial states of struggling eurozone countries into chaos. He was meant to discuss the bailouts of Greece and Portugal with European Union financial officials at a meeting in Brussels this week.

Eswar Shanker Prasad, a professor of international economics at Cornell University, said: “This sordid episode – no matter how it ultimately plays out – will spell the end of Strauss-Kahn as an effective leader of the IMF even if he retains his position, which is highly unlikely.” The IMF, however, insisted it remained “fully functioning and operational.”

Strauss-Kahn was to appear in court in Manhattan yesterday charged with three crimes, including attempted rape, but the hearing has been delayed so he can undergo forensic tests. He was taken into custody by officials while on an Air France passenger plane which was about to take off from John F. Kennedy International Airport for Paris; when detectives approached him in the first class cabin in the aircraft he reportedly asked: “What is this about?” Strauss-Kahn reportedly fled the hotel “in a hurry” after the attack, leaving a number of personal effects behind. “If our officers had been ten minutes later he would have been in the air and on their [sic] way to France,” a spokesperson for the New York Police Department said.

The chambermaid reported that she had been sexually assaulted by a man staying in a “luxury suite” at the Sofitel hotel near Times Square. “The maid described being forcibly attacked, locked in the room and sexually assaulted,” the police spokesperson said. Strauss-Kahn came out of the shower naked while the chambermaid was working in the room, tried to pull the woman onto the bed and locked the door, The New York Times reported, quoting police sources. She allegedly fought him off, but he sexually assaulted her again after dragging her to the bathroom, before he locked her in the room; she was reportedly hospitalized afterwards with trauma.

In 2008, a year after becoming the leader of the IMF, Strauss-Kahn was reprimanded by the organization’s board after being involved in an extramarital affair with another senior executive at the bank. More recently, he was pictured driving a luxury car in Paris, causing a media furore over whether his lifestyle fitted with the socialist attitude he claims to represent. But his wife, former television star Anne Sinclair, has dismissed the accusations. She said: “I do not believe for one second the accusations brought against my husband. I have no doubt his innocence will be established.”

US dog attack owner charged with involuntary manslaughter

Friday, March 25, 2005A Spotsylvania County woman, whose three dogs allegedly attacked and killed her elderly neighbor, was freed Wednesday by posting a $10,000 bond. Dianna Large, 36, received one felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and three misdemeanor charges in an indictment issued last week.

In her first appearance before a judge, she answered Circuit Court Judge William H. Ledbetter questions with simple “Yes sir.” and “No sir.” responses. The short hearing, held Thursday, formalized the charges against her. The involuntary manslaughter charge, a first in the severity of punishment being sought on a dog owner in the Virginan state of USA, carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.

State procecutor Wiliam Neely said that Large knowingly let her three Pit Bull dogs run free, and that an animal control agency person had warned her to keep them under better control. She also a violated a county ordinance requiring owners of dangerous dogs to post a warning sign to visitors. The prosecution also noted that none of the three male dogs were neutered.

The Animal Control Department of Virginia maintains a dangerous dog registry. It contains a list of owners whose dogs are deemed dangerous to society. The link to the registry was moved to a more prominent position on the county web page following the attack.
